Last month Mitch and I went on a quick little vacation. We left on a Friday morning (we had a 8:45? am flight, which didn't seem early when we were booking it, but actually, it really was early considering it was an "international" flight and we had to be there really early) and flew into Quebec City, Canada (by way of our favorite airport, Detroit).
When we landed in Quebec, it was really cold. The customs guy even asked us why we were coming to Quebec in April. We thought he was joking, but he wasn't and he wanted an answer. Ummm... because... we didn't think it'd be this cold? (Besides that, we weren't sure if/when we'd have time to go later in the summer.) He let us in.
By the time we'd checked into our hotel and settled in, we were ready for dinner. The hotel gave us a map and recommended that we walk along a nearby street for a restaurant. We did. Actually, we walked it probably four times. One way, then the other, then back, etc. We wanted to see all of our options.
The next day, we went to Vieux-Quebec (Old Quebec). We walked there, stopping at a little patisserie along the way for breakfast. (I ordered for us in French!) Pretty sure I could get used to stopping at a patisserie every morning. Vieux-Quebec is surrounded by this big wall. It's like... a city inside of a city.We walked along the little streets and up to the Chateau Frontenac.
We also went and took a tour of the Citadel, which, as I understand it, was Canada's "fortress" to protect them against the Americans. Now it's a military base.
It was an interesting tour. My favorite part was the medal room that housed all of the military medals that the Canadians have. I like medals. The only problem was that Quebec City was ridiculously cold. Like, seriously freezing. Someone told us that this time last year was beautiful, but apparently we weren't that lucky.
After the Citadel, we briefly looked at the Parliament building and then went back to our hotel.
